Be The Change (Canada: 2008, 55 mins.)
Thursday October 29, 2009, 7:00pm
Urey Underground Lecture Hall
Directed by David Chernushenko

Be the Change is an inspiring documentary about people living lightly — and loving it! The film explores the motivations for, and the challenges and rewards of, trying to live more lightly.

This is a “100-kilometre” film made entirely in the Ottawa region, using sustainable practices whenever possible. Its stories, lessons and power to inspire are universal, however. The film’s subjects, or “local heroes” show that we can all make a difference by making smarter choices, whether as simple as composting or as ambitious as building an off-grid home. They also show that people who choose to live lightly represent a broad cross-section of society. They come from diverse age groups as well as professional and socio-economic backgrounds. They live in urban, suburban and rural areas. And they each cite different motivations and methods for living lightly.

What the subjects do have in common is a desire to share their ideas and act as positive role models.

Be the Change is an upbeat and inspiring film, that is accessible to audiences of all ages and types. It introduces the idea of “living lightly” or living sustainably, but without the guilt or the sense of paralysis that often accompany so-called environmental talks or films.
